ה׳ אלקי ואלקי אבותי ואמותי,
כשם שאני עומד בתוך חדרי חדרים ומתפלל,
כך בתוך חדרי חדרים שמע
את תהילותי ואת בקשותי,
גם מהרהורי פי גם מהרהורי לבי.
ואף אם אני שקט
תדע שתפלתי מכוונת לך,
אחד ושמך אחד,
לבד בעולמים.
לבי ער וקולי דופק.
פתח לי,
אדוני תמי,
שערי תפילה.

God and God of my forefathers and foremothers,
as I stand here in an innermost room and pray,
so too should you in an innermost room heed my questions,
my praises and my requests,
both from the utterances of my mouth and the utterances of my heart.
Even if I am silent,
you will know that my tefilla is directed towards you,
who is One and whose name is One,
alone in all the worlds.
My heart is awake and my voice knocks.
Open for me,
my Lord, my Perfect One,
the gates of Tefilla.

David Zvi Kalman

David Zvi Kalman is a Fellow in Residence at Shalom Hartman Institute of North America, where he is also a member of the inaugural cohort of North American David Hartman Center Fellows. David Zvi leads the Kogod Research Center’s Theology research team. He received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, where he writes on Jewish law, the history of technology, and Islamic jurisprudence. He is the owner of Print-O-Craft Press and executive director of Jewish Public Media.
